I tossed the whole idea of Power out the window instantly. I didn’t want the power I’d gotten, much less more of it. If I could, I would have gotten rid of it all and gone back to being regular, old Murf again. It had brought me nothing but unhappiness, pain, and misery. No, Power was out.

Skill didn’t seem too bad. I was great at cards, but I could always be better. The problem was, it didn’t say skill in what. Would I become a better gambler? Great! A better street sweeper? Less great. A better Holder? Not interested. Again, I didn’t even want what I had, much less more of it. The problem was, I was pretty sure that was exactly what I would be getting. The Unity had no real motivation to make me a better gambler, after all, but it seemed to delight in making me a more powerful Holder.

Companionship—actually, that sounded kind of nice. I was alone in the blackness, and while it was kind of comforting, it was also a little lonely. Someone to talk to sounded just about like what I needed. I focused on that, and a new card appeared.
